Bigger and Better: Trump Secures US-UK Trade Deal

Trump finalizes trade agreement with the United Kingdom

Get ready for some major changes, folks! US President Donald Trump has announced a new trade deal with the UK. He took to his Truth Social platform to spill the beans, calling it a "full and comprehensive" agreement that'll strengthen the bond between the US and the UK. Trump waxed poetic, stating, "[This deal] will be a very big and exciting day for the United States of America and the United Kingdom."

Trump's press conference is set for 10 am local time (4 pm CEST) in the Oval Office. The President shared his delight at the UK making the first move, hinting at more deals on the horizon. "It's a great honor to have the United Kingdom as our FIRST announcement. Many other agreements, which are in serious negotiation phases, will follow!"

At first, Trump kept the nitty-gritty details under wraps. Rumors had been swirling that the UK might score a break on Trump's tariffs, especially for the automotive industry, which heavily relies on exports to the US. In return, rumors hinted at concessions in agricultural products and taxes on digital services. Nevertheless, some experts cautioned that the agreement may only cover specific economic sectors or be limited in duration.

Say Goodbye to Chlorinated Chicken and Hormone-Treated Beef?

Currently, the UK faces US tariffs of 10% on most exports but 25% on steel, aluminum, cars, and car parts. The UK recently inked a comprehensive free trade agreement with India, marking a new era of trade.

The deal with the US might not hinder a possible reconciliation with the EU. Reports suggest the US's food standards won't be recognized under the deal, so don't expect chlorinated chicken or hormone-treated beef at British supermarkets anytime soon, according to the Financial Times.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, along with EU Council President António Costa, are keen to deepen the UK-EU relationship at an EU-UK summit on May 19. A dynamic agreement in the area of animal health and food standards has been rumored frequently.
