The recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, has brought a potential shift in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

During the discussions, Putin offered to freeze the frontline in Ukraine without seeking to capture more territory, in exchange for Russia's control over the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Trump indicated openness to providing US security guarantees to Ukraine, signaling a move towards pursuing a direct peace agreement rather than an immediate ceasefire.

However, the talks were deemed inconclusive or lacking significant immediate progress. The Russian advance in the Donbas region continues, with no ceasefire agreements or deadlines to stop the war in Ukraine discussed during the negotiations. Putin is demanding that the root causes of the Ukraine conflict, including his grievances against the US, NATO, and their support for Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, be addressed for any agreement to be possible.

Trump has praised the meeting, stating that it brought the world somewhat closer to finding an end to the killing in Ukraine. He has also scheduled talks with Zelenskyy, emphasizing a potential shift from ceasefire negotiations to broader peace negotiations.

The peace agreement, if successful, could lead to a significant change in the geopolitical map, potentially redrawing borders to include Donbas in Russia, similar to the Crimea. It could also potentially lead to Russia expanding to include parts of Georgia.

India, being the only major customer of Russian oil, has welcomed the supposed Alaskan breakthrough and urged Trump on. However, some critics compare the situation to the Munich of 1938.

Trade between the US and Russia has reportedly increased by 20% since January 2025, although no additional sanctions, tariffs, or penalties were threatened during the negotiations.

The situation remains complex, with no immediate cessation of hostilities confirmed as a direct outcome of the summit. Trump's actions in the meeting have been compared to Yogi Berra's famous quote "it's not over until it's over."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, is pursuing diplomacy with Trump in phone conversations and a meeting in Washington, despite Russia being given a free hand to advance. The next steps in this diplomatic dance will determine if Trump's efforts will be successful in breaking Putin's intransigence and bringing a lasting peace to Ukraine.
