TikTok's Prolonged American Struggles

Trump extends TikTok's operational duration in the USA for a specific period.

Good ol' Donald Trump has given TikTok another round in the USA, extending its availability for another 90 days. Despite a law demanding a sell-off, the short video juggernaut continues to dance on American soil - for now. This marks Trump's third extension, with no tangible solution in sight.

The debacle started when TikTok was supposed to part ways with its Chinese parent, ByteDance, by January this year, or face the ban hammer. But Trump, being the master of the extension, granted a 75-day respite at the initial stroke, flouting the legal norms.

Politicians and experts in the US have long been skeptical about TikTok, fearing the Chinese government could use it for spying or manipulating public opinion. The companies, however, vehemently deny these allegations.

Tariff Twists and Turns

Trump had initially offered lower tariffs to China in exchange for their nod to the TikTok sale. He openly acknowledged that the Chinese government might hold some sway over the deal. "Maybe I'll give them a little reduction in tariffs or something like that to get the deal done," Trump said.

The Algorithm Struggle

The heart of the controversy lies in TikTok's algorithm, which serves up videos to users. Critics warn of potential influences on public opinion, a claim TikTok and ByteDance vehemently dismiss. The law, however, strictly prohibits any control by the Chinese government or ByteDance over the algorithm.

China's Role in the Algorithm

Trump tried to push for TikTok's sale earlier but faced legal roadblocks. Under the Biden administration, a law was passed providing a solid legal ground for TikTok's ban in the USA. However, Trump seems enamored with the app, delaying the execution of the law. Trump's spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, justified the extension as providing "more time to make a good deal."

In the meantime, China implemented a rule during Trump's term mandating government approval for the sale of software algorithms abroad.
