Trump Grants TikTok a 90-Day Extension for Sale Amidst Data Security Concerns
Trump prolongs TikTok sale deadline by an additional 90 days - Trump extends TikTok sale deadline for a further 90 days
In the world of social media, TikTok remains a talking point, especially for the U.S. government. Since Trump took office in January, the app has been under scrutiny due to allegations that its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, could be sharing American user data with Beijing.
Leavitt, a Trump spokesperson, hinted that the goal of the sale is to ensure "U.S. users can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and protected." Trump seems to have softened his stance towards TikTok lately, probably to attract younger voters in his 2024 campaign.
This isn't the first time Trump has extended the deadline for a TikTok sale. Initially, he banned the online platform from U.S. app stores for 75 days upon taking office, citing national security concerns. He then extended the ban for another 75 days in early April. Now, with another extension of 90 days, the U.S. government has more time to review the deal carefully.
Trump's early allegations against TikTok were rooted in fears of potential data leaks and Chinese government influence. These concerns were amplified by investigations and reports that emerged over the years. For instance, in 2022, TikTok admitted allowing Chinese employees access to American user data, which raised eyebrows. The Senate Intelligence leaders also requested the FTC to look into whether TikTok misled the public about data privacy.
However, TikTok continues to deny any wrongdoing and has been implementing measures to separate American user data from Chinese control. The situation is complicated, with the U.S. government maintaining a high level of skepticism towards TikTok's ties to China. As of June 2025, the app faces a de jure nationwide ban in the U.S., but it hasn't been enforced yet.
