A Potential Dance of Leaders: Trump, Putin, and Zelensky in Turkey
Trump Expresses Readiness to Confer with Ukraine and Russia Leaders to Advocate for a Cessation of Hostilities
The meeting chessboard is being set with President Donald Trump hinting at a potential conference with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts in Turkey. The proposed gathering, following unsuccessful attempts to reach a ceasefire, would mark the third round of face-to-face talks.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan initiated the proposal, suggesting a summit with Putin, Zelensky, and Trump during either Istanbul or Ankara later this month. However, Putin has yet to confirm his attendance. Zelensky, in agreement, has stated that key issues can only be resolved at a leaders' level.
The previous meeting in Istanbul, which also marked the first round of direct talks, resulted in an agreement for another large-scale prisoner exchange. Top negotiators from both sides confirmed this deal would involve exchanging severely wounded soldiers and all captured fighters under the age of 25, with each side trading an estimated 1,000 prisoners[1][3].
The Ukrainian and Russian parties also agreed to hand over the bodies of 6,000 slain soldiers following the talks[2]. The ceasefire remains elusive, with Moscow rejecting the motion of an unconditional ceasefire, while offering a limited pause in fighting for two to three days in certain battlefield zones[2].
Tens of thousands of lives have been claimed by the seemingly inescapable conflict in Ukraine, with widespread destruction across the eastern and southern regions and millions displaced since Russia's invasion[1]. As the negotiations continue amid ongoing military action, calls for stronger international pressure, such as U.S. sanctions against Russia, persist[1].
