Trump expresses pessimism about achieving results from his meeting with Putin, according to the Finnish President's statement.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to be a point of international concern, with the main diplomatic efforts involving the governments of Ukraine, Russia, and various international organizations or countries. As of now, there are no publicly confirmed or active ceasefire negotiations directly between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The ongoing talks, if any, are more likely between official representatives of the involved countries or mediated by international actors. Public statements from both Putin and current world leaders have indicated that a comprehensive ceasefire is not imminent, with Moscow maintaining its demands and Kyiv emphasizing territorial integrity.

If a ceasefire is not reached, the consequences for Russia could be severe. Prolonged conflict could deepen economic sanctions and isolate Russia further from international markets, technology, and finance. Continued military engagement risks higher military casualties and depletion of resources. Political instability or domestic dissatisfaction might increase if the war drags on without resolution. International condemnation and potential further actions (e.g., more sanctions or diplomatic expulsions) could also ensue.

For third countries, the economic impact could be significant. Global energy markets, especially for natural gas and oil, might remain volatile, affecting energy prices worldwide. Ukraine, a major grain exporter, being embroiled in conflict disrupts exports, potentially leading to food shortages and price hikes in vulnerable regions, particularly in parts of Africa and the Middle East. Prolonged fighting could also destabilize the broader European region, prompting increased military spending and NATO deployments. Refugee flows could increase, putting pressure on neighboring and European countries for humanitarian relief and asylum.

In a recent virtual meeting, Alexander Stubb, the Finnish President, stated that Trump is going to convince Putin to accept a ceasefire. Trump has also committed to holding a new videoconference with the same participants as today's meeting, immediately after the end of the summit with Putin. However, Trump has shown skepticism about whether he will succeed in making Putin accept a ceasefire. If a ceasefire is agreed upon, Ukraine must decide if it accepts the possible terms.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian counterpart, was also present in the meeting. The leaders of France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Poland, as well as the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the Secretary-General of NATO, Mark Rutte, also participated in the videoconference. The summit in Alaska, scheduled for Saturday, aims to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine. Ukraine must be present in the negotiations for any agreement to be viable.

Despite the ongoing uncertainty, the harmony among all participants in the virtual meeting was evident on several basic principles to move towards peace. However, the absence of a ceasefire poses serious risks to Russia economically and politically and has significant consequences globally, particularly in energy and food security, as well as regional and international security.
