Trump expresses opposition to Zelensky's stance on not surrendering Ukrainian territories to Russia

In the ongoing Ukraine-Russia territorial dispute, a significant development has emerged as U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin prepare for their meeting on August 15 in Alaska. According to reports, Trump has proposed a cease-fire and negotiations, suggesting direct talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Putin, followed by a trilateral meeting involving himself.

However, this approach faces resistance from both Ukraine and Russia. Zelensky has repeatedly warned that Ukraine will not cede any territories to Russia, a stance he reiterated on Monday. In a statement on his Facebook page, Zelensky wrote, "Ukraine will not give up its territories."

Moscow, on the other hand, has demanded the annexation of four Ukrainian regions: Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, in addition to the Crimea annexed in 2014. Trump, in a statement, found it strange that Ukraine needs permission to proceed with an exchange of territories. However, his statement implies that there could be exchanges of territories in the context of the meeting between him and Putin.

Trump's proposal and Putin's demands have raised concerns in Ukraine. Zelensky has called on not giving in to Putin's demands, and the U.S. has not ruled out the possibility of Zelensky attending the meeting between Trump and Putin.

In contrast to Trump's focus on negotiation and cease-fire, Zelensky remains focused on securing Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He has not publicly made compromises on Ukraine’s territorial claims and continues to seek international support, including advanced weapons and sanctions on Russia, to resist Russian invasion and occupation.

This contrast highlights Trump’s prioritization of negotiation and cease-fire, while Zelensky prioritizes Ukraine's defense and sovereignty. Zelensky has also stated that Russia should not receive rewards or advantages for refusing to stop massacres.

As the meeting between Trump and Putin approaches, the international community will be watching closely to see how these two leaders will address the complex and sensitive issue of the Ukraine-Russia territorial dispute.

| Leader | Current Political Standpoint on Ukraine-Russia Territorial Dispute | |--------------------|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Donald Trump | Advocates for immediate cease-fire, direct talks between Zelenskyy and Putin, followed by trilateral talks. Views the conflict as a diplomatic "deal" to end the war. | | Volodymyr Zelenskyy| Insists on defending Ukraine’s territorial integrity, skeptical of early cease-fire talks that might concede territory, focused on military and diplomatic support to resist Russia. |
