Trump expresses discord with UK Prime Minister Starmer over acknowledging Palestine: "One of our occasional differences of opinion"

During a significant week in international relations, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reiterated his support for the recognition of Palestinian statehood as part of a broader peace plan. This move comes as the United States, under President Donald Trump, maintains a different stance on the issue.

Trump is currently on a state visit to Britain, and it appears that Britain is holding off on officially recognising Palestine until the conclusion of Trump's visit to avoid a potential political clash. However, Starmer and Trump 'absolutely agree' on the need for an Israel-Palestine peace roadmap.

Last week, the UN General Assembly voted 142-10 in favour of a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict, with the US voting against the nonbinding resolution. Meanwhile, the UK, along with Portugal, has decided to officially recognise the State of Palestine. If the UK goes through with this, it could become the first G7 nation to do so. Israel, however, has harshly criticised the UK's move, suggesting it is a reward for Hamas, the Palestinian militant group. The UK has swiftly rejected this claim, stressing that Hamas should no longer be part of Gaza's administration.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been active in the region, initiating a ground incursion into Gaza City, a Hamas stronghold, while simultaneously launching strikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. The situation in Gaza, according to Starmer, is intolerable, and he has called for immediate action to bring about a safe and secure Israel and a Palestinian state.

Trump, during his visit, has reaffirmed his ties with the country and expressed a desire for the release of all hostages taken in the October 7, 2023, attacks. The Middle East continues to be a hotspot of international tension, and the developments in Palestine are a significant part of the ongoing discourse.
