In a whirlwind visit to the UK, former US President Donald Trump was met with a mix of pomp, protests, and diplomatic tensions.

On his second visit to Britain, Trump was lavished with the full pomp of the British state, with King Charles III hosting him at Windsor Castle. The US president claimed it as one of the highest honours of his life at the state banquet. However, the US first lady was kept far from the British public during the visit.

The visit was not without controversy. Peter Mandelson, the British ambassador to Washington, was sacked by Keir Starmer over his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. Emails revealed a close relationship with Epstein and attempts to support Epstein’s early release, leading to Mandelson's dismissal.

Trump and Starmer had a disagreement over the UK's plan to recognize a Palestinian state. Despite this, they described their relationship as "leaders who genuinely like each other." The two leaders also had discussions on Ukraine, with Starmer gently nudging Trump on Ukraine and calling for more pressure on Putin. Trump issued a rebuke to Vladimir Putin for continuing the war in Ukraine and stated that if the price of oil comes down, Putin will drop out of the war.

On a more positive note, Trump and Starmer signed a huge tech cooperation deal, with US giants including Microsoft, Google, and Blackstone pledging £150 billion ($205 billion) of investment into the UK. The deal was attended by US tech CEOs, signifying a significant boost for the UK's tech sector.

However, the visit was not without protests. An estimated 5,000 people protested against Trump's visit in central London. Trump offered to stop immigration into the UK, even if it meant calling in the military, a suggestion that was met with criticism from various quarters.

Trump spared Keir Starmer the harsh criticism he has doled out to other leaders. Instead, he praised King Charles' peace efforts and support for Ukraine during the visit. As he left Britain after less than 48 hours, Trump said goodbye to King Charles at Windsor, calling him a "great gentleman and a great king."

In conclusion, Trump's visit to the UK was a complex mix of ceremonial grandeur, political tensions, and economic opportunities. While the visit was met with protests, it also resulted in significant investment deals and a boost to the UK's tech sector. The diplomatic tensions between Trump and Starmer over Ukraine and the recognition of a Palestinian state remain to be seen.
