Trump expresses disappointment towards Putin and warns of the potential escalation of the Ukraine conflict leading to World War III, yet suggests a strategy to curb Putin's tyranny
In an hour-long press conference held at the historic Chequers estate, former US President Donald Trump and UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer discussed a range of global issues.
Trump expressed his views on the ongoing Ukraine conflict, stating that while it does not directly affect the United States, it could potentially lead to a global conflict. He also suggested that a decrease in oil prices, brought about by increased production from OPEC+ countries including Russia, could financially weaken Russia and potentially end the war.
However, Trump disagreed with Starmer's decision to recognise Palestine as a state. He expressed disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the high casualty rates in Ukraine, which he claimed have reached levels not seen since the Second World War, with millions of people reportedly losing their lives. Trump also referred to the October 7 attacks, claiming to have seen the tapes of the attacks in 2023, and stating that it was one of the worst, most violent days in history.
Starmer, on the other hand, criticised some Western countries for being too reliant on Russian energy. He did not comment on Trump's statements regarding October 7 or the Ukraine conflict.
During the news conference, various topics were discussed, including immigration and the assassination of MAGA influencer Charlie Kirk. Trump had no regrets about inviting Putin for a meeting in Alaska last month and praised his administration's work in organizing the release of hostages. He also expressed a desire for the immediate release of hostages in the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Trump was shocked by the harrowing treatment of hostages by Hamas and suggested that the Ukraine war could escalate into World War 3. He also expressed disappointment with Putin for 'killing many people' in Ukraine.
Throughout the press conference, both leaders maintained a respectful demeanour, demonstrating a willingness to engage in open and frank discussions on pressing global issues.
