Trump expresses desire to recover top-tier land for Ukraine ahead of Putin meeting

In a move aimed at ending the ongoing three-and-a-half-year conflict in Ukraine, US President Donald Trump has proposed a land swap that would grant Russia control over certain territories in eastern and southern Ukraine, including parts of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. These regions are currently occupied by Russia and contain significant natural resources such as lithium, coal, and gas.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected this proposal. He emphasized that Ukraine's constitution defines its territorial integrity and no land will be ceded to Russian control. This stance reflects the broader Ukrainian resistance to legitimizing Russian occupation of these regions.

The implications of the proposed land swap are significant. For Ukraine, ceding resource-rich and agriculturally vital territories could cause profound economic damage. Before the war, agriculture was Ukraine's third-largest sector, contributing nearly 11% to GDP and employing millions. The war has already caused an estimated $80 billion in agricultural losses and threatens global food security due to disrupted exports.

For Russia, acquiring these territories would secure vast natural resources critical for economic gain and global commodity markets like lithium and gas, potentially strengthening Russia's strategic position despite international sanctions.

The conflict, which has endured over three and a half years, has seen Russia occupying roughly 20% of Ukraine's territory, including the annexed Crimea peninsula since 2014. A land swap could formalize Russian territorial gains, potentially undermining Ukraine's sovereignty and affecting international support for Ukraine. However, without Ukraine's agreement, such a deal is unlikely to produce a durable ceasefire or peace.

European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Finland's President Alexander Stubb, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. They have also stated that an approach combining active diplomacy, support to Ukraine, and pressure on the Russian Federation to end their illegal war is necessary for success.

As the international community awaits the summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska, it remains to be seen how this proposal will unfold and whether a lasting peace can be achieved. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to emphasize that Ukraine's territorial integrity is non-negotiable.
