Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky's Heart-to-Heart Talk in the Netherlands

The Netherlands hosted a gathering of numerous world leaders, culminating in an agreement to increase defense spending. Amid this, US President Donald Trump had a heartwarming chat with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Their frosty relationship seems to be thawing. Putin's role was also discussed.

Trump pondered whether Russian leader Vladimir Putin harbored territorial goals beyond Ukraine during a press conference marking the end of the NATO summit in The Hague. He plans to talk to Putin over the phone soon, as he announced.

Trump's meeting with Zelensky in The Hague was "splendid," according to him. Despite the hardship, Zelensky is bravely facing a painful war, he said. Trump also hopes to broach the war's end with Putin. "It's high time to put an end to it; I'll have a word with Vladimir Putin to see if we can bring a stop to it," he said.

Trump found Zelensky a "difficult conversation partner" and expressed sympathy for the many lives lost on both sides. However, he admitted that ending the conflict has proven tougher than he initially anticipated. "War is grueling, Putin is formidable."

Zelensky too spoke of their "lengthy and insightful discussion" with President Trump. They discussed ways to achieve a lasting truce and "just peace," Zelensky penned in a tweet. He was grateful for Trump's attention and his efforts to bring peace closer. Later, Zelensky wrote that they also discussed the collaboration in producing drones and strengthening each other. Primarily, their conversation revolved around the purchase of US air defense systems and Ukraine's readiness to back American weapons manufacturers.

A Ukrainian Woman's Plea to Trump

At the press conference, a Ukrainian journalist asked Trump about military aid for Ukraine. Trump, intrigued by her origin, asked if she was currently residing in Ukraine. Upon learning that she was in Warsaw with her children but her husband was in Ukraine as a soldier, Trump expressed compassion. "That's rough," he said. He seemed to be moved and wished her well. "I wish you luck. I can sense how it impacts you. Take my best wishes to your husband."

This was the second time Trump and Zelensky spoke after their tumultuous meeting at the White House in February. "We faced challenging times," Trump conceded, now praising Zelensky highly. In the Oval Office, Trump had been harshly critical of the Ukrainian president and abruptly ended the meeting. They met again on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ funeral at the Vatican in April.
