Just when it seemed things couldn't get more heated between California and the White House, President Donald Trump signed a trio of resolutions, turning California's ambitious electric vehicle (EV) plan into smoggy, hot air. Trump put the brakes on California's ambition to ban gas-powered vehicle sales by 2035.

Trump staunchly opposes the EV movement, fearing it'd spell doom for fossil fuel industries. He's been a vocal critic since his campaign, vowing to boost fossil fuel resources instead. California, however, remains unbowed, ready to challenge the resolutions in court.

California, the undisputed EV champion, boasts a whopping 25% of all new EVs sold in the U.S.—a testament to its green transformation. But Trump's move comes as a slap in the face, particularly in the face-off between Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The recent showdown between the two didn't involve power cords but National Guard soldiers and US Marines. Trump dispatched them to Los Angeles during the protests against his administration's deportation policies, despite Newsom's objections. Newsom hit back with accusations of authoritarian behavior.

The resolutions have sparked legal repercussions, with California, joined by ten other states, filing a lawsuit. California Attorney General Rob Bonta argues that Trump's moves are illegal, jeopardizing lives, economies, and the environment. Good ol' Trump's actions are causing quite the ruckus, making it the 26th time they'll see each other in court.

The Nitty-Gritty:

Trump revoked the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) waivers that had enabled California to set stricter emissions standards. Fighting for unity within the auto industry, Trump claims these differing standards cause confusion for manufacturers, who have to juggle federal and state rules. The lawsuit seeks to protect California's authority to set emissions standards, as granted by the Clean Air Act, and to uphold the comprehensive emissions rules adopted by 17 states.
