When pressed on this matter by the media, Trump confirmed that these workers had been toiling for American farms for two decades or more and that these farmers loved their employees.
Looking beyond the borders, approximately 10 to 11 million undocumented immigrants reside in the US. They typically work in sectors like agriculture, construction, care, and hospitality, enduring precarious working conditions. Despite paying taxes, they often miss out on state benefits.
Take Los Angeles, for instance, where nearly a million undocumented immigrants reside. The city has been gripped by protests targeting the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detaining migrants without papers for deportation. During his campaign, Trump had promised to launch the largest deportation program in American history.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has found vindication in Trump's statements. In response to Trump's post, Newsom wrote on X, "It ain't good policy to harass hardworking peasants on farms and grab women and kids off the streets." Newsom had previously accused Trump of instigating militant operations exceeding his announced intentions to only target dangerous criminals and major offenders in Los Angeles.
In the words of Newsom, "ICE agents snatch up dishwashers, gardeners, day laborers, and seamstresses," and he contends that Trump isn’t safeguarding communities but rather causing distress. Trump recently hinted at upcoming changes without releasing further details.
