Trump does not anticipate reaching an agreement with Putin
Ukraine, embroiled in a three-and-a-half-year conflict with Russia, is preparing for a significant diplomatic meeting. The Alaska summit, scheduled for Friday, aims to discuss a potential resolution to the ongoing invasion.
In the midst of these negotiations, Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, emphasises Ukraine's defence of independence and involvement in any decision concerning the country. Despite this, he has not been invited to the Alaska meeting. US NATO Ambassador Whitaker, however, has suggested the possibility of inviting Zelenskyy.
The German government stresses the importance of involving Ukraine in any peace solution, stating that it is only imaginable with Ukraine's involvement for a sustainable and fair peace. This sentiment is shared by the EU Foreign Policy Chief, who insists on a full and unconditional ceasefire before discussing concessions, and has announced a new EU sanctions package against Russia.
As for territorial concessions, Zelenskyy has firmly opposed any peace deal that involves permanent territorial concessions to Russia. He insists any negotiations must respect Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders and reject Russia’s annexation attempts. This stance contrasts with former U.S. President Donald Trump's views, who has historically expressed views suggesting Russia should retain some territory it occupies, advocating for a negotiated settlement that may involve concessions by Ukraine.
Trump, who will be meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, has also expressed a desire for a ceasefire and mentioned the possibility of a land swap between Ukraine and Russia. However, it has been confirmed that Trump and Putin will not sign an agreement on the Ukraine conflict before their meeting.
In terms of ceasefires, Zelenskyy sees them as tactical pauses rather than steps toward a final peace deal that compromises Ukraine’s sovereignty. Emmanuel Macron, President of France, has consistently backed ceasefires as a way to protect civilians and create conditions conducive for negotiations, although he recognizes challenges in ensuring their durability.
As the diplomatic landscape unfolds, it remains to be seen how these various positions will influence the outcome of the Alaska summit and the future of Ukraine's ongoing conflict with Russia.
