Rumors are abuzz about the departure of national security advisor Mike Waltz from President Donald Trump's administration. Major U.S. media outlets, such as Fox News, suggest this move is connected to a March scandal.
Initially, Trump's adversaries criticized many of his appointees, from Defense Secretary Hagset to Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. However, the President stood by them. What led to Waltz's downfall?
Media outlets trace the reason to the March scandal, as Waltz created a secret chat on the Signal app to strategize strikes against the Houthis in Yemen. In an ironic twist, Jeffrey Goldberg, the main editor of The Atlantic, somehow got an invite and later spilled the beans in the magazine.
The incident was labeled as "irresponsible handling of classified information" by Democrats, but Trump publicly backed his advisor initially. Nevertheless, an internal investigation followed. It revealed that Waltz and his assistant, Alex Wong (also reportedly stepping down), had accidentally added Goldberg to the chat. In addition, the official was found to use personal email for official business and discuss secret matters on other chat groups.
Waltz was involved in Ukraine negotiations with Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Saudi Arabia in February. Today, he provided insights on the Ukrainian situation, stating progress toward a peace agreement. Although he advocated for economic pressure on Russia, he recently aligned with Trump's political stance.
A possible replacement for Waltz is special envoy Steve Whitcoff. Whitcoff, who has met with President Putin on several occasions, plays a crucial role in Russia-U.S. negotiations. If appointed, Whitcoff's status would significantly escalate.
Waltz, a former US Army Special Forces officer, received four bronze stars, two for valor. He worked at the Pentagon, was elected to Congress, and supported military aid to Kyiv during the SVO. Close ties to the American military-industrial complex characterize Trump's reorganization during his first term.
High turnaround in the White House during Trump's first term was a result of his continually shaky position under accusations, many of which concerning contacts with Russians. During his first presidency, Donald appointed and dismissed four national security advisors.
At the time of this article's publication, no official confirmation of Waltz's resignation had been made. The US State Department declined to comment on the information.
