In a significant development, U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska to negotiate an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The proposed peace deal centers around achieving an immediate ceasefire and exploring the possibility of a full peace agreement [1][2].

Trump has insisted that Putin must agree to a ceasefire at their summit or face "very severe consequences," though he did not specify what these consequences would be. However, he has made it clear that he will not be involved in any territorial concessions discussions, urging Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to negotiate these matters directly [1][2].

Putin has demanded that Ukrainian forces withdraw from four regions that Russia claims but does not fully control, including Donetsk. He also requires Ukraine to formally renounce plans to join NATO as part of the ceasefire conditions [1][2].

Zelenskyy has expressed strong resistance to these demands, stating that Ukraine will "never leave" the Donbas region and warning that withdrawal could allow Russian forces to launch further invasions. He has emphasized that any diplomatic solution requires Ukraine’s involvement and has called for a trilateral summit with Trump and Putin to negotiate terms [1][2].

The meeting is described as a "feel-out" or listening exercise, with Trump framing it as a first step before potentially more productive talks [1][3]. European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron and Friedrich Merz, have participated in a call with Trump and Zelenskyy and align with the objective of a ceasefire [1][2].

However, Ukraine and its partners are wary because Putin has historically rebuffed unconditional ceasefire proposals [1]. If an agreement is reached, it is expected that Russia would halt its offensive in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions along current battle lines. Trump has suggested that there will be some exchange of land for the betterment of both parties [1][3].

The U.S. administration took a step toward punishing Moscow's oil customers on Wednesday, imposing an additional 25% tariff on goods from India over its imports of Russian oil, marking the first financial penalty aimed at Russia in Trump's second term [4].

Accepting the loss of around a fifth of Ukraine's territory would be painful and politically challenging for Zelenskyy and his government. However, Ukraine has previously signaled a willingness to be flexible in the search for an end to the war [5].

The situation remains sensitive with no firm agreement yet. It was unclear by Friday evening whether those sanctions would take effect or be delayed or canceled. The Bloomberg News reported that U.S. and Russian officials were working towards an agreement that would lock in Moscow’s occupation of territory seized during its military invasion, but this was denied by a White House official and a Kremlin spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment [6].

Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a close ally of Ukraine, said earlier on Friday that a pause in the conflict could be close. Donald Tusk predicted that there are hopes for a freeze in the conflict in Ukraine [7].

Zelenskyy was "very cautious but optimistic" and that Ukraine was keen that Poland and other European countries play a role in planning for a ceasefire and an eventual peace settlement [8]. Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff held three hours of talks with Putin in Moscow on Wednesday that both sides described as constructive [9].
