Trump chats with Putin on Ukraine, eyes potential ceasefire

Are we any closer to resolving the Ukraine conflict? That's the question swirling following President Trump's latest chat with Russian Leader Vladimir Putin. According to TASS, the main topic of their discussion was supposedly finding a resolution for the situation in Ukraine.

Trump shared some insights during an interview on the New York Post podcast, stating, "We had a good conversation, but nothing's been sewn up just yet." The U.S. President also mentioned his decent rapport with Putin, calling the Ukrainian conflict brutal and remarking that "nothing like this has been seen since World War II."

It's worth noting that on June 10, Russian Ambassador to Washington Alexander Darichev announced that Russia and the U.S. might edge closer to resolving "irritants" in their bilateral relationship, with talks moving from Istanbul to their respective capitals. The next round of discussions in Moscow is set to happen in the near future.

A call between Putin and Trump occurred on June 4, during which they discussed the Russia-Ukraine conflict, along with the recent talks in Istanbul. Putin was vocal about his belief that the current Ukrainian regime doesn't harbor any desire for peace and accused them of trying to derail the negotiation process.

Previously, Peskov had hinted at some obstacles in the Russia-U.S. relationship.

The Russian Leader showed willingness to discuss "compromises" on Ukraine. Despite previous face-to-face talks between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Istanbul, no significant agreements were reached. The strategic interest in a ceasefire is intricate, as Russia might potentially view continued pressure as a means to weaken Ukraine further if international support lessens. The recent announcement indicates a renewed effort towards diplomacy, but the success of these negotiations remains uncertain given historical challenges in reaching agreements between the two nations.

  2. As political tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to dominate global headlines, the war-and-conflicts and general-news sectors are closely monitoring the ongoing negotiations, with concerns about the strategic interests at play, particularly Russia's potential use of continued pressure to weaken Ukraine further if international support lessens.
