Trump designates Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy as provisional NASA administrator
In a surprising move, President Donald Trump appointed Sean Duffy as the interim Administrator of NASA in July 2025. Duffy, a former MTV reality TV star, district attorney, congressman, and current U.S. Secretary of Transportation, brings an unconventional background to the role, as he lacks a formal background in space, science, or engineering.
Duffy's appointment came after the withdrawal of Jared Isaacman's nomination, amid political tensions involving prominent space industry figures. His tenure at NASA marks a shift towards an administration-loyalist managing the space agency, coinciding with a proposed significant budget cut for the agency.
The Trump administration's proposed budget for 2026 slashes funding for NASA's science directorate by 47 percent and cancels more than 40 missions, potentially ending U.S. leadership in space science. The Senate appropriations committee, however, has indicated that its initial appropriations bill will keep NASA science funding flat and limit cuts to the National Science Foundation.
As an interim administrator, Duffy holds the Transportation Secretary portfolio full time, effectively making his leadership at NASA part-time and administrative. Real operational control is largely delegated to NASA’s Chief of Staff and Deputy Associate Administrator. The expectation is that Duffy, as a trusted administration loyalist, will vigorously implement White House directives, which currently focus heavily on budget cuts and workforce reduction at the agency.
At least 2,145 senior-ranking staff members have accepted offers to leave NASA as part of the Trump administration's broader efforts to shrink the federal workforce. The Senate restored funding for missions Artemis 4 and 5 in its reconciliation bill, which President Trump signed into law on July 4.
Duffy's initiatives as transportation secretary include an overhaul of the U.S. air traffic control system and clamping down on enforcement of English-language proficiency requirements for commercial truck drivers. His tenure at NASA signifies an emphasis on political loyalty and budget austerity over scientific or exploratory vision, at least in the interim period.
Janet Petro, the current acting administrator who will return to Florida as the director of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, expressed confidence in Duffy's leadership as they carry forward the President's ambitious agenda. The move fills a temporary leadership void at NASA, which has been without a duly appointed administrator since Trump took office.
Duffy acknowledged his new role as NASA's interim administrator in a post on X. Prior to his political career, Duffy was a star of the 1997 reality series The Real World: Boston and a world-champion competitive lumberjack.
