Trump Departs G-7 Summit Amidst Escalating Iran Tensions; Modi Meets in Canada for Fresh Start

In the heat of the global trade war stirred by President Donald Trump following his re-election, the much-anticipated Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada promised all the drama and intrigue that the world's wealthiest economies can muster. However, Trump's premature exit from the venue left leaders of Canada, India, Ukraine, Mexico, Brazil, and South Africa in a lurch, with cancelled or unconfirmed meetings with the US president looming large.

For India, two meetings were critical – one with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to mend frayed diplomatic relations and another with Trump to lay rest the issue of his repeated claims of mediating the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. The Modi-Trump conversation saw India vehemently rejecting any third-party mediation in the India-Pakistan disputes, implicitly debunking Trump's repeated claims of successful mediation.

Meanwhile, President Trump had planned a private lunch for Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir. With the poor optics of Modi's presence in Washington in the face of the Pakistan Army chief's warm welcome, Modi used his visit to Croatia as his excuse. Some speculate that the American outreach to Pakistan could be understood in the context of the close coordination between the US and Israel over attacks on Iranian military and nuclear installations, as well as key personnel, or perhaps Germany's chancellor's remark that Israel was doing “their dirty work.”

In the event, Prime Minister Modi chose the G7 platform to voice his concerns about counter-terrorism. Without explicitly naming Pakistan, he highlighted the absurdity of the US President hosting the Pakistan Army chief amidst suspicions of his complicity in the Pahalgam terror attacks.

The tango between the US and Iran took a new turn when Israel launched surprise attacks on Iranian military and nuclear installations on June 13, the purpose of which was to set back Iran's nuclear program. Despite the extensive damage, Iran's hypersonic missiles managed to break through Israel's Iron Dome, making Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urgently seek US help to complete Netanyahu's mission. The US has reportedly stationed midair refuellers in the region as a precaution. However, the question on everyone's mind is whether the US would join Israel in attacking Iran's remaining nuclear facilities or if Trump's frequent warnings were mere bargaining chips. Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has remained unyielding, refusing to concede to US demands for "unconditional surrender".

The tensions between Iran and Israel cast a long shadow over the G7 summit, which was meant to discuss Ukraine's situation. However, President Trump refused to endorse any statement supporting Ukraine. Instead, he bewailed Russia's exclusion from the G7 and wondered why China wasn't included. His geo-strategic vision seemed to contradict the very reason for the formation of the G7. As a result, no joint communique was issued, though several resolutions were passed on artificial intelligence, quantum computing, migrant smuggling, and critical minerals. Canada pledged $4.3 billion in aid to Ukraine, with almost half going towards defence equipment.

Modi's discussions with Canadian PM Mark Carney bore fruit, with diplomatic relations being restored and new high commissioners appointed. The two leaders also agreed to combat terrorism more effectively, introducing the phrase "transnational repression" which extended to any attempt by one country to intimidate or influence the citizens of another country or its democratic processes. However, Carney declined to discuss the Hardeep Singh Nijjar issue, citing its sub-judice status. With global trade disrupted by Trump's actions, India and Canada have a prime opportunity to boost their trade and investment ties, an agreement that needs expediting.

As the world watches with bated breath, it remains to be seen how Trump handles Iran's nuclear program next. If peace talks fail, the Middle East and, indeed, the world may be witness to an uncertain and potentially dangerous outcome.

  1. Amidst the heated global trade war and political tensions, the issue of migration, particularly from war-and-conflict zones, has gained significant attention in the general-news discourse.
  2. The escalating conflict between Iran and Israel has raised concerns in the arena of crime-and-justice, as Israel's surprise attacks on Iranian military and nuclear installations could potentially lead to further war-and-conflicts.
  3. Despite the G7 summit primarily focusing on Ukraine's situation and critical minerals, the conversation around counter-terrorism and transnational repression has extended to issues of sports-betting and European leagues, given the involvement of various nations in these spheres.
  4. In the wake of President Trump's controversies and premature exit from the G7 summit, car-accidents have become a concern for security personnel, particularly during high-profile meetings, to ensure the safety of world leaders.
  5. As the US and Israel contemplate their next moves in the Iran conflict, fires, possibly as a result of military operations, have been reported in certain regions, raising environmental and humanitarian concerns.
  6. In an unexpected twist, the debt accumulated due to general-news events such as war-and-conflicts, accidents, fires, and sports incidents has led to a surge in sports-betting, with European leagues like the Premier League becoming an odd betting ground during these troubled times.
