The historic second state visit of US President Donald Trump to the UK is underway, with a grand display of military pomp and pageantry at the beginning of the day's events. A 120-strong guard of honor, the largest staged for a state visit in living memory, was present to welcome the President at Chequers, the Prime Minister's official country residence.
Trump was greeted by the Prince and Princess of Wales as he began the royal charm offensive. The day's events featured a carriage procession through the grounds of Windsor accompanied by a sovereign's escort of 80 mounted soldiers.
At the State Banquet, the President described the King and Queen as "very, very special" and the bond between the US and the UK as "priceless and eternal." Donald Trump also noted that the Princess of Wales looked "so radiant and so healthy" during his speech.
A bespoke transatlantic whisky sour cocktail, garnished with a toasted marshmallow and set on a star-shaped biscuit, was served at the state banquet. The grand dinner in St George's Hall included organic Norfolk chicken and a vanilla ice cream bombe.
Bilateral meetings are scheduled to take place during the visit. A meeting between Donald Trump and Sir Keir Starmer, the Leader of the Labour Party, is scheduled to take place at Chequers. Sir Keir Starmer and his wife Lady Victoria will also meet the President.
Trade deals between the UK and US are expected to be unveiled during the business reception hosted by the Chancellor. Billions in investment into the UK by tech executives forming part of Trump's delegation are expected to be announced. The tech executives in President Trump's delegation, including Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, are planning billion-dollar investments in the UK in collaboration with London-based data center operator Nscale Global Holdings.
Thousands of protesters have been marching through central London against the US President. Live updates for the state visit can be followed on a live blog. One lone individual has reportedly been rallying in favor of the US president.
The visit is expected to be one of the highest honors of Trump's life, he stated during his speech at the State Banquet. A bilateral meeting and a business reception are scheduled to take place during the remainder of the visit.
