Trump denies knowing Peter Mandelson
In a surprising turn of events, Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, dismissed Peter Mandelson from his position as ambassador to the USA last week. The decision was made following Mandelson's historic friendship with the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Mandelson, who spoke at length in the Oval Office in May when the U.K. and U.S. agreed a limited trade deal, was fired due to leaked emails showing the ambassador had sent Epstein effusive support the day before Epstein began his 2008 prison sentence for soliciting prostitution from a minor. The emails were revealed by Bloomberg.
During a joint press conference with Starmer last week, Donald Trump was asked about his opinion on Mandelson's sacking. Trump replied that he does not know Mandelson. However, when asked if he sympathized with Mandelson over his sacking, Trump indicated that he was not aware of Mandelson.
Starmer has been embroiled in a row over what his team knew, and when they knew it, about Mandelson's actions. However, he insists that information about Mandelson's actions was not available when he was appointed.
It is worth noting that Trump has faced questions about his past association with Jeffrey Epstein. Trump is accused of contributing to a 2003 'birthday book' in Epstein's honor, but the White House denies the authenticity of his alleged note.
During their meeting in the Oval Office last week, Trump offered Mandelson a deal on a Rolls Royce. Trump also told Mandelson that he found his accent beautiful.
Trump suggested that Starmer might be better suited to speak about Mandelson's sacking. However, Starmer was asked about Mandelson's sacking during the same press conference, but he did not directly address the issue.
Mandelson built links with Trump allies during his eight months in office. Despite this, it seems that these connections were not enough to save his position.
This incident marks a significant turn in British-American relations, with Starmer taking a firm stance against any association with individuals like Epstein. The fallout from this decision is expected to be closely watched in the coming days.
