Trump calls for 30-day ceasefire, threatens sanctions in Ukraine-Russia conflict

Trump demands a 30-day pause in conflicts, warning of economical penalties if peace isn't reached

In an informal yet straightforward message on his Truth Social platform, former US President Donald Trump has urged for a 30-day ceasefire in Russia's ongoing war with Ukraine. The call comes following discussions with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

"The US ideally calls for a 30-day, unconditional ceasefire," Trump declared. He reiterated that it is crucial for both countries to honor this ceasefire. Failure to do so will result in further sanctions imposed by the US and its partners.

The proposed ceasefire aims to pave the way for peace talks to ensure a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine. Trump emphasized his commitment to working with European leaders for this cause. "As President, I will continue to work with Europeans for lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine," he said.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy confirmed that he had discussed a 30-day ceasefire with Trump. However, he made it clear that negotiations with Russia would only occur if Moscow demonstrated a genuine intention to end the war.

The ceasefire proposal also coincides with the newly signed Ukraine-US resource agreement. The agreement, which concerns the joint exploitation of oil, gas, and minerals in Ukraine, was the result of lengthy negotiations and amendments at Ukraine's request, before being signed at the end of April. The Ukrainian parliament ratified the agreement on Thursday evening.

Historically, a diplomatic success for Ukraine, the resource agreement was initially scheduled to be signed in February during Selenskyj's visit to Washington. However, that did not materialize due to a scandal involving Trump and his Vice President JD Vance, who accused Selenskyj of disrespect and ingratitude over US military aid.

Understanding the Conflict

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in significant humanitarian crises and geopolitical tensions. Trump's proposal for a ceasefire is one of several diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the situation, despite Russia's past reluctance to accept similar proposals. The success of these initiatives remains uncertain, but they offer a glimmer of hope for a peaceful resolution to this prolonged conflict.

The European Union, in line with Trump's call for a 30-day ceasefire, is seemingly committed to advocating for a comprehensive and comprehensive policy on the environment, given the potential impacts of the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict on general news and politics, and the possibility of peace talks. Failure to honor the ceasefire might lead to further sanctions being imposed, as Ukrainian President Zelenskyj has confirmed discussions with Trump, but insists that negotiations will only transpire if Russia demonstrates a genuine intention to end the war. However, the success of these diplomatic efforts is uncertain, as Russia has shown reluctance to accept similar proposals in the past.
