Trump delays TikTok ban implementation, enabling the app to remain operational in the United States temporarily
In a series of events spanning over five years, the future of TikTok in the United States remains undecided. The popular video-sharing app has faced numerous hurdles, with the most recent delay set to expire on September 17.
The journey began on President Trump's first day in office, when an executive order was issued, setting the stage for potential restrictions on TikTok due to concerns about the Chinese government's potential control over the app.
Since then, the app has faced four delays, the latest being in June. These delays were aimed at giving time for a permanent solution to be found, ensuring TikTok's continued operation in the U.S.
Despite White House officials believing they were close to finalizing a plan to spin off TikTok into a U.S.-owned company in April, the plan never materialized. As of the date of this article, no definitive deal has been reached regarding the future ownership of TikTok in the U.S.
The bipartisan measure passed by lawmakers, citing concerns that the Chinese government could compel the company to hand over U.S. user data or manipulate TikTok's algorithm to influence public opinion, remains in effect.
Under the new order, TikTok will remain usable in the U.S. until a permanent deal is reached. The details of this potential deal have not been disclosed, but Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently announced a "framework" for a permanent deal to keep TikTok operational in the U.S.
The meeting between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding the TikTok deal is scheduled for Friday. President Trump, who began his second term on January 20, 2025, will be discussing the future of TikTok in the U.S. during this meeting.
If a deal is finalized, it would be permanent, extending TikTok's usability in the U.S. beyond December 16, 2025. Until then, TikTok users in the U.S. can continue to enjoy the app, with the understanding that its future is still uncertain.
