Trump declares Putin meeting a stepping stone towards significant Ukraine negotiations

The upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled to take place at a US air base outside Anchorage, Alaska, has raised hopes for a potential resolution to the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

During an interview with Fox News Radio, President Trump expressed optimism about the second meeting, which he believes could be where significant deal-making over the Ukraine war would occur. The potential outcomes of the Trump-Putin-Zelenskyy meetings center on arranging a bilateral meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to negotiate peace, securing security guarantees for Ukraine, and addressing territorial disputes.

Trump has committed to helping European partners provide security guarantees for Ukraine, a move that Zelenskyy has welcomed, seeing it as a step towards reassuring Ukraine's defense without making immediate territorial concessions. However, Russia remains uncompromising, demanding a role in any security discussions and rejecting direct talks without preconditions.

The core issues—Russian demands on Donbas and influence over Ukraine’s security policy, and Ukrainian sovereignty—remain unresolved. Zelenskyy has firmly opposed surrendering sovereign territory, citing constitutional restrictions, insisting that Ukraine must decide its territorial future.

Despite the meetings, no significant breakthroughs have been achieved thus far. Trump has stressed the urgency to act immediately to prevent more casualties, but disagreements, particularly Russia’s stance, continue to impede progress. The US leader has suggested a 25% chance that the summit will not be successful.

Trump initially suggested there would be "land swapping" in the Ukraine conflict, a statement that has added to the concerns in Europe. However, he has since walked back his statement after speaking with European leaders. The possibility of a second meeting, involving both leaders, has been suggested if the first summit is successful.

If the second meeting occurs, it is expected to be crucial for resolving the Ukraine conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is not scheduled to attend the first summit, but a second meeting might involve him if the first is successful.

The heightened fears in Europe are that Trump and Putin could strike a deal that would force painful concessions on Ukraine. While the meetings have opened channels and explored security guarantees, much work remains to be done to resolve the core issues and bring about a lasting peace in Ukraine.
