Trump declares Medvedev's surrender following his announcement

In a brewing diplomatic tussle, ex-Russian bigwig Dmitri Medvedev, now Deputy Head of the national security council, has backpedaled his rhetoric on potential nuclear armings for Iran - all thanks to a sharp rebuke from US President Donald Trump.

The dustup started when Medvedev, criticizing the U.S. attack on Iran, stated on the X platform that "unlike Israel, we, Russia, are a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty," insinuating potential nuclear delivery from third-party states to Iran.

Earlier, Medvedev had incited speculation when he hinted at nuclear suppliers in his disapproval of the U.S. strike on Iran's facilities. He refrained from naming specific countries.

Trump didn't hold back, firing back on his Truth Social platform: "Did Medvedev really say the N-word (nuclear threats)? The US president asked, urging caution in using such weighty terms. Trump pointed out Vladimir Putin's continued presidency as contrast, implying that Medvedev's assertion fell short.

Though Medvedev's statement seems to misalign with Russia's stance, Moscow supports peaceful nuclear use in Iran but opposes its nuclear armament. Once considered a liberal hope in his tenure (2008-2012), Medvedev's recent remarks have been fueling headlines with aggressive and provocative statements. There are whispers about his alcohol problem.

In their recent meeting, Russian leader Vladimir Putin received Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi. While offering diplomatic support to Iran against air strikes by Israel and the U.S., Putin remained ambiguous on further collaborative actions[1]. Some analysts believe Russia's war in Ukraine has limited its capacity to provide substantial assistance to Iran[3], instead choosing diplomatic overtures for now.
