Trump criticizes Jack Smith and Biden for investigating Turning Point USA in an election inquiry
The FBI launched an investigation in April 2022, known as Arctic Frost, into various organizations, including the Republican National Committee, Republican Attorneys General Association, and Turning Point USA Today. The probe focused on lines of inquiry regarding false fraud claims, false electors scheme, false lawsuits, financial fraud, and state pressure. Special counsel Jack Smith, who took over the investigation's findings in November 2022, is also reportedly investigating Trump's role in seeking to overturn the 2020 election results. The investigation of Turning Point USA Today, a conservative group, is part of this larger probe. In a January letter to former Attorney General Merrick Garland, Smith denied that his charges against Trump were politically motivated. He asserted that the decision to bring charges against Trump was his own and that he stands behind it fully. Sen. Chuck Grassley, however, suggested that the inquiry into Turning Point USA Today, along with other conservative groups, was a gross abuse of power at the hands of FBI Director Christopher Wray and the Biden administration. Grassley stated that Arctic Frost was not just a case to politically investigate Trump, but a vehicle for partisan FBI agents and Department of Justice prosecutors to achieve their partisan ends and improperly investigate the entire Republican political apparatus. It is unclear why Turning Point USA Today was included in the investigation. The assassination of Charlie Kirk, the organization's founder, does not seem to have been a focus of the FBI's inquiry. Smith's resignation occurred ahead of Trump's inauguration. His charges against Trump, including charges alleging mishandling of classified documents, were dismissed in November 2024. Smith's claim that his decisions as a prosecutor were influenced or directed by the Biden administration or other political actors was dismissed by him as 'laughable.' Recently, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, criticizing the investigation of Turning Point USA Today by special counsel Jack Smith and the Biden administration. Sen. Chuck Grassley also published unclassified files from the FBI's probe into allegations that Trump was seeking to overturn the 2020 election. The investigation of Turning Point USA Today and the broader Arctic Frost probe continue to be topics of interest and debate in American politics.
