In a recent interview with CNN's Jessica Dean, CNN's chief data analyst, Harry Enten, highlighted a concerning development for former President Donald Trump and the House Republicans. Trump's net approval rating on handling inflation stands at a staggering -28 percentage points, suggesting that a significant majority of Americans disapprove of his management of inflation.

Enten pointed out that this rate mirrors the low approval levels Joe Biden experienced on inflation during 2022-2023, indicating a deep unpopularity on this issue. The decline in trust towards Trump on inflation is also transferring over to House Republicans, according to Enten.

A Marquette University Law School poll revealed that inflation remains the top issue for a majority of Americans. This concern is reflected in the poll results, with 61% of Americans disapproving of Trump's handling of inflation, and 52% disapproving of his policies on jobs and the economy.

Trump's import taxes, seen as a major contributor to current inflation, are disapproved by 56% of voters, further underscoring the public's dissatisfaction. Despite this, Trump's overall net approval rating across all issues is slightly better but still negative, around -12, according to a recent Economist/YouGov poll.

Enten's comments come amidst a shifting political landscape. In a recent Fox News poll, the Democratic Party had a +1 net approval rating on inflation, a significant shift to the left compared to the GOP's +13 net approval rating in the same poll from October 2022.

Enten described Trump's current standing on inflation as being "in the gutter" with voters. He compared Trump's current net approval rating on inflation to that of Vice President Kamala Harris last year, which was +9. Voters consistently express that Trump is neglecting the main issue of the day, which is inflation.

If current inflation approval ratings persist or remain similar on Election Day 2026, Enten predicts that Republicans are unlikely to retain the House of Representatives. This prediction underscores the potential political risk for the Republican party, with inflation continuing to be a significant concern for American voters.
