In a series of recent events, President Donald Trump has found himself embroiled in legal disputes with media outlets and allegations of interference by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Trump, who claims to be a "great champion of free speech," has initiated a lawsuit against the "New York Times" for allegedly reporting false information about him. However, a judge, Steven Merryday, dismissed Trump's defamation lawsuit, stating that a lawsuit should not be used as a "megaphone for public relations" or a "platform for impassioned speeches." Merryday rejected the 85-page complaint because it was excessively long, contained irrelevant and inflammatory language, and failed to present a concise and factual statement of claims as required by civil procedure rules. He gave Trump 28 days to submit a revised, shorter complaint limited to 40 pages.

Meanwhile, critics allege that FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, appointed by Trump, improperly pressured media companies to cancel the show of talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, effectively ending its run. The show was indeed cancelled, with some attributing this to pressure from the FCC Chairman. Some are now calling for Carr's resignation.

Trump dismissed the criticisms against Carr, describing him as a "patriot." Trump has also suggested revoking television station licenses, a power that lies with the FCC. However, the FCC has not publicly addressed the allegations against Carr.

The FCC, which traditionally remains neutral, oversees broadcast licenses. The U.S. media landscape is not immune to partisan bias. Some television networks and media outlets, such as Fox News, have been criticized for favoring one of the two major political parties, with Fox News being more critical of Democratic presidents like Biden and Obama, but praising Trump. CNN, on the other hand, has been criticized for not adequately covering political blunders by Biden.

Trump has accused media outlets reporting "unfairly" on him of effectively being pawns of the Democrats. He has stated that if someone is hearing 97 percent negative stories about a person, that's not free speech, that's fraud. Trump has become "immune" to negative coverage of him.

These developments highlight the complex relationship between the media, the President, and the FCC, raising questions about the balance between free speech, partisan bias, and the role of regulatory bodies in these matters.
