In a significant development, Chinese and U.S. officials have reached a consensus on the authorization of intellectual property rights, including the algorithm, for TikTok to operate within the U.S. This agreement comes after President Donald Trump extended deadlines for TikTok to be spun off from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

The call between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, which was aimed at finalising a deal for TikTok to continue its U.S. operations, may offer clues on the future of relations between the world's two superpowers.

According to reports, both sides agreed on entrusting a partner with handling U.S. user data and content security for TikTok. This decision is a crucial step towards addressing the data privacy and national security concerns that led to the initial scrutiny of the popular social media app.

However, no deals have been announced on tech export restrictions, Chinese purchases of U.S. agricultural products, or fentanyl. Trump, in the call, may seek to make it appear that the United States has the upper hand in trade negotiations, while Xi, in his turn, may underscore China's economic leverage and warn that continued progress in bilateral relations will hinge on an easing of U.S. tariffs, sanctions, and export controls.

The trade war between the two countries during Trump's second term has taken a toll on U.S. farmers, with one of their top markets being lost. American farm exports to China fell 53% from January through July compared to the same period last year. The damage was particularly severe in some commodities, with U.S. sorghum sales to China down 97%.

Top U.S. and Chinese officials have held four rounds of trade talks between May and September, with another likely in the coming weeks. The call between Trump and Xi could mark a turning point in these negotiations, as they are reportedly very close to deals on TikTok and other issues.

Looking ahead, Trump and Xi are scheduled to meet at a summit in South Korea next month, and Trump is expected to travel to China in 2026. The specific details of these events are yet to be disclosed.

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, the ranking Democrat on the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, has demanded that TikTok's data and algorithm be 'truly in American hands' to comply with the law. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these demands will be addressed in the final agreement.

The call between Trump and Xi marks a significant moment in the complex relationship between the U.S. and China. The future of TikTok, and potentially other trade issues, hangs in the balance as both leaders work towards a resolution.
