Trump concludes his UK state trip with heartfelt thanks to his gracious hosts, managing to dodge major contentious topics
During President Donald Trump's second state visit to the United Kingdom, a significant agreement was reached between Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This historic pact, focusing on science and technology, is expected to bring thousands of jobs and billions in investment to the artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and nuclear energy sectors.
The deal, which could lead to significant job gains, includes an announcement by American companies of a 31 billion pound ($42 billion) investment in the U.K.'s AI sector. Microsoft alone is set to invest $30 billion, with plans to develop Britain's largest supercomputer. A U.K. arm of Stargate, a Trump-backed AI infrastructure project led by OpenAI, is also part of the deal.
In addition, investment will flow from the U.K. to the U.S., with pharmaceutical firm GSK pledging almost $30 billion. The U.S., represented by investment firm Blackstone, has pledged a total of 150 billion pounds ($204 billion) in investment over the next decade.
Discussions between Trump and Starmer covered a range of topics, including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, U.S. tariff rates on steel imported from Britain, and immigration policy. However, no specific agreement on changes regarding taxes on steel and aluminum was reported. The discussions focused on broader trade issues, technology, energy, biosciences, and a significant US investment package.
The royal family and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer engaged in a charm offensive during Trump's visit, with King Charles III and Queen Camilla feting Trump and first lady Melania Trump at Windsor Castle. Despite this, there was a notable lack of progress on some key matters during Trump's visit, including advancements in the discussions about Ukraine.
Trump largely avoided questions about Jeffrey Epstein during his visit, which began days after Starmer fired Britain's ambassador to the U.S., Peter Mandelson, over his past friendship with Epstein. Police arrested four people over a stunt that saw an image of Trump and Epstein projected on a tower at Windsor Castle.
Trump called King Charles III and Queen Camilla "two fantastic people" and expressed gratitude for their hospitality. Towards the end of the trip, Trump's helicopter made an unscheduled landing due to a minor hydraulic issue.
In a cordial discussion about Britain's impending move to recognize a Palestinian state, Trump and Starmer also addressed the ongoing issues in Gaza. The British government has grown increasingly critical of Israel's conduct in Gaza and the suffering of Palestinian civilians.
The agreement between Trump and Starmer marks a significant step forward in the relationship between the U.S. and the U.K., with promises of substantial investment and job creation in cutting-edge technologies. As the details of the agreement are finalised and implemented, the impact on both countries' economies and technological landscapes will become more apparent.
