Trump concludes his UK official visit with appreciation towards his hosts, mostly avoiding contentious topics.
During his second state visit to the United Kingdom, President Donald Trump announced a significant agreement on science and technology with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This deal is expected to bring thousands of jobs and billions in investment in AI, quantum computing, and nuclear energy.
The agreement includes a commitment from American companies, such as Nvidia and OpenAI, to invest billions in British artificial intelligence infrastructure, particularly in data centers. Microsoft has pledged $30 billion for products including Britain's largest supercomputer.
Pharmaceutical firm GSK will invest almost $30 billion in the U.S., while investment firm Blackstone has pledged 90 billion pounds ($122 billion) in the U.K. over the next decade. U.S. companies have collectively pledged 150 billion pounds ($204 billion) in investment in the U.K.'s AI sector.
The discussions between Trump and Starmer also covered topics such as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and U.S. tariff rates on steel imported from Britain. Despite the talks, efforts to lower duties on steel and aluminum to zero from their current level of 25% have stalled.
Trump expressed gratitude for the pageantry and splendor during his visit, stating that the bond between the U.S. and U.K. is like no other in the world. He called King Charles III and Queen Camilla 'two fantastic people' during his visit to Windsor Castle.
However, the visit was not without incident. Trump's helicopter made an unscheduled landing due to a minor hydraulic issue during his departure from Chequers. Additionally, police arrested four people over a stunt that saw an image of Trump and Jeffrey Epstein projected on a tower at Windsor Castle.
Trump and Starmer had a cordial discussion about Britain's impending move to recognize a Palestinian state. Trump has expressed frustration with Putin, but has not made good on threats to impose new sanctions on Russia.
Trump and global business leaders also held a roundtable during the visit, discussing the potential of the U.K.'s AI sector and the broader initiative to boost AI through investments and technology partnerships.
Despite the controversies, the state visit marked a significant step forward in the U.S.-U.K. relationship, with both parties committing to a future of cooperation and innovation in the fields of science and technology.
