Trump commutes life imprisonment term for Gangster Disciples founder Larry Hoover, effectively granting him early release from federal prison.

President Donald Trump has granted clemency to Larry Hoover, a notorious Chicago gang leader and founder of the Gangster Disciples, according to Hoover's legal representatives. Hoover, 75, has spent nearly three decades in solitary confinement at ADX Florence, a high-security prison in Colorado.

The Bonjean Law Group announced the commutation of Hoover's federal life sentences in a statement to our website. "Larry Hoover, the founder of the Gangster Disciples, has had his federal life sentences commuted by President Donald Trump," the statement read. The group further explained that Hoover has been in solitary confinement at one of the United States' most secure prisons since his incarceration.

In 1973, Hoover was convicted of murder for his involvement in the death of a 19-year-old drug dealer in Chicago. Despite the federal commutation, Hoover still faces a 200-year state sentence for that conviction. The federal charges, which resulted in six life terms in 1997, came decades after his state conviction.

The Bonjean Law Group argued that the courts have failed to consider Hoover's "considerable growth and complete rehabilitation." The group asserted that despite the court's unwillingness to make a different decision, Hoover has been able to continue his advocacy from prison.

Hoover's case has attracted attention from high-profile figures within the entertainment industry, including rappers Kanye West and Drake. In 2021, the two artists set aside their differences to perform at an Amazon-sponsored concert advocating for Hoover's release at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

Controversy surrounding Hoover's case remains. Some claim he still wields influence over the Gangster Disciples from prison, while others argue he is unfairly targeted by law enforcement. In the community, Hoover is often viewed as a Robin Hood figure who helped his neighborhood. However, Hoover's extensive criminal record and the damage attributed to his gang activities are subjects of ongoing debate.

As a result of the commutation, Hoover is expected to be transferred from the supermax prison in Colorado to a facility in Illinois. "We are thrilled to see that Mr. Hoover will be released from federal custody," the Bonjean Law Group concluded.
