Trump characterizes the impending summit with Putin as an exploratory gathering
In a highly anticipated meeting, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin convened in Alaska on August 15, 2025, with the primary focus on negotiating an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The three-hour-long summit, however, concluded without a ceasefire agreement or any concrete progress. Russian forces continued their military operations during the talks, indicating no shift in Moscow's position.
Trump's objective was to set in motion a ceasefire and halt the ongoing violence in Ukraine by engaging directly with Putin, leveraging his political capital for peace. Putin, on the other hand, aimed to avoid conceding any material conditions and used delay tactics, continuing Russia's military campaign without agreeing to halt operations.
Despite the absence of a deal, both leaders discussed the possibility of future meetings, potentially in Moscow, but made no firm commitments on next steps or peace terms.
Trump expressed hope for "constructive conversations" but downplayed the possibility of ending the war in Ukraine. He also reiterated his claim that the war wouldn't have started if he were president.
Trump's goal is to set up a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Putin, or between himself, Zelenskyy, and Putin. He indicated that he may tell Zelenskyy and European leaders to "keep fighting" or that a deal can be made.
The meeting marked the first time Putin has been in the U.S. since 2015. Trump expressed appreciation for Putin coming to the U.S. instead of the other way around.
Although no ceasefire was agreed upon, the Alaska summit served as a high-profile effort focused on the Ukraine conflict. The outcome remains uncertain, with Putin maintaining a hardline position and Trump unable to secure immediate progress.
