In a significant ruling, a US federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., has blocked the dismissal of Federal Reserve Vice Chair Lisa Cook, denying President Donald Trump's plans to remove her from office. This decision marks a setback for Trump's efforts to reshape the Fed in his image.

The power struggle between Trump and the Fed, with the latter's independence emphasized by the judge, has been ongoing. Trump has been putting pressure on the Fed for some time, demanding the resignation of the current Fed chair, Jerome Powell. However, the legality of Trump actually firing the Fed chair remains unclear.

The appeals court's decision to block Cook's dismissal comes after a lower court made a similar ruling. Last week, a judge in the case argued that the U.S. President could only dismiss a member of the Fed board for "good cause," and that behaviour from before taking office should not be the sole basis for dismissal.

Cook has been at the centre of this controversy, with Trump wanting to remove her due to allegations of mortgage fraud. However, Cook has denied these allegations, stating that any false statements she may have made regarding her mortgage were made years before she joined the Fed.

Cook's lawyers have also argued that Trump cannot dismiss her. The judge's argument that the President could only dismiss a Fed member for "good cause" was upheld by the appeals court. The judge further wrote that the public interest in the Fed's independence spoke in favor of reinstating Cook.

The Fed plays a significant role worldwide, contributing to the financial stability of the USA. This ruling is seen as a victory for those who believe in the Fed's independence and the importance of keeping political pressure away from its decisions.

Trump has announced his intention to appeal to the Supreme Court to remove Cook from her position. It remains to be seen how the highest court in the land will rule on this matter.

In the meantime, Cook continues to serve on the Fed board, maintaining its independence and contributing to its important work. The Fed's role in maintaining the financial stability of the USA is more crucial than ever, especially in these uncertain times.
