Trump boldly declares he won't let Putin encroach on his territory, while Putin expresses a desire for a mutual agreement in the lead-up to a significant Alaska summit, aiming to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

In a historic summit held at the Elmendorf-Richardson base near Anchorage, Alaska, former US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met with the aim of ending the ongoing Ukraine war. The prospect of peace in Ukraine remains uncertain, as the conflict continues into its fourth year and the gap between Russia's demands and Ukraine's conditions remains wide.

The summit, scheduled for Friday, marked Putin’s first face-to-face discussion with an American leader since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, underscoring its diplomatic significance. The discussions between the two leaders lasted several hours, reflecting an intense negotiation process.

Trump presented the summit as making progress on Ukraine, albeit without a ceasefire, while Putin emphasized mutual respect and the geographic closeness of their countries rather than specifics about the war. The Kremlin had confirmed the exact programme for the summit, including a one-on-one meeting between Trump and Putin to discuss sensitive matters behind closed doors.

Prior to the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was on a tour meeting with sympathetic European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the British Prime Minister. Trump plans to call Zelensky after the summit to discuss further negotiations. European leaders have warned against making a deal without Ukraine and have said Zelensky must be present for any future talks.

The Western leaders, led by Britain and France, have demanded an end to hostilities, no changes to Ukraine's borders by force, and robust security guarantees for Kyiv. The Downing Street spokesperson confirmed that there was a sense of unity and a strong resolve to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

Zelensky and the British Prime Minister held talks over a private breakfast to discuss the upcoming summit. Trump and Putin are said to have lunch together before the press conference, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Putin tried to butter up Trump by hailing his "sincere efforts" to reach peace. However, Trump warned that there is a "25 per cent chance" the meeting with Putin ends in failure. Trump believes Putin "would like to see a deal" and claims that if he weren't president, Putin would "take over all of Ukraine." Trump believes that Putin will make peace and that Zelensky will also make peace, but only if they can get along.

Trump plans to have a second round of peace talks "very quickly" after the initial summit, involving Putin, Zelensky, and possibly some European leaders. The summit unfolded under extraordinary security, with both leaders making long-haul flights to attend the meeting. Aside from substantive discussions, the summit also featured symbolic moments, such as Putin and Trump sharing a ride in the US presidential limousine ("The Beast"), which underscored a surprising thaw or spectacle in their interactions.

In summary, the Alaska summit did not yield a concrete ceasefire or peace agreement on Ukraine but was presented by both leaders as a positive step forward with further talks anticipated involving other stakeholders like Zelenskyy and European nations. The road to peace in Ukraine remains a complex and challenging journey, but the Alaska summit marks a significant step in the diplomatic process.
