Trump asserts that no agreement will be reached without Ukraine's involvement
President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin recently held a summit in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025, marking the first bilateral meeting between the two leaders in seven years. The meeting was primarily focused on discussing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
During the summit, Trump expressed his belief that the Russian attacks were hurting Putin in the talks, and he assured that he would not make any agreements with Putin without involving Ukraine. He also emphasized his role in bringing Putin to the negotiating table for the Ukraine issue.
Trump, on board Air Force One for the flight to Alaska, stated that he understands his role in the Ukraine conflict and sees the ongoing Russian attacks in Ukraine as a negotiating tactic. He also threatened severe economic consequences for Moscow if Putin does not seek peace in Ukraine.
In the summit, Trump and Putin discussed the "exchange" of territories in Ukraine. Trump has emphasized his cooperation with European states on the Ukraine issue. However, no ceasefire agreement was reached, and both leaders described the talks as constructive. They did not take questions from reporters during a press conference following the meeting.
Following the meeting, Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House, where discussions likely continued regarding the Ukraine situation. It is important to note that Zelenskyy was not invited to the summit in Alaska.
The upcoming bilateral summit between Trump and Putin in Alaska is set to take place at a US military base. As of now, there is no information about an upcoming meeting regarding the Ukraine conflict. Trump has described Putin as a "smart guy" and noted that there is great respect between the two leaders.
The nearly seven-hour flight to Alaska for the summit underscores the importance of the meeting for both leaders. As the situation in Ukraine remains a significant global concern, the outcome of this summit will be closely watched by many.
