Trump asserts support for the peace agreement, distancing it from a mere temporary truce
Trump Shifts Stance on Ukraine Conflict, Pursues Comprehensive Peace Agreement
In a significant shift from his initial approach, President Donald Trump has expressed a preference for a comprehensive peace agreement over a mere ceasefire to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
This change in stance was evident following Trump's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, USA. Trump described the meeting as going very well, but did not specify any plans for a follow-up meeting.
Prior to the summit, Trump had been advocating for a quick ceasefire between Kiev and Moscow, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. His initial stance was to accept most of Russia's demands, including Russian control over occupied Ukrainian territories, no NATO membership for Ukraine, and easing sanctions on Moscow.
However, by July 2025, Trump expressed strong disappointment with Putin and set a firm deadline—first 50 days, then reduced to 10 days—for Russia to agree to a ceasefire or face new economic measures. This tougher approach indicates a focus on stopping the war rather than finalizing a one-sided peace deal.
Kiev has demanded a temporary ceasefire as a first step towards a comprehensive agreement. Trump has not yet mentioned any timeline for the peace agreement in his statements to journalists.
Zelensky's visit to the White House, which was confirmed by him this morning, is expected to provide more details on Trump's new approach. Trump plans to receive Zelensky in the Oval Office of the White House on Monday.
Trump has also suggested the possibility of a tripartite summit between the American, Russian, and Ukrainian leaders. However, the specifics of such a meeting have not been revealed.
In a late-night call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and various European leaders, Trump stated that it was determined by all involved that the best way to end the war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a peace agreement.
Trump's conversation with NATO secretary-general Mark Rutte, which he described as successful, may also provide insights into the international community's role in facilitating a peace agreement.
As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how Trump's new stance will impact the ongoing conflict and the prospects for a lasting peace.
