Trump asserts Kimmel's dismissal due to lack of talent, while Obama criticizes government coercion
In a recent turn of events, the late-night talk show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" has been indefinitely cancelled following a series of controversial remarks made by its host, Jimmy Kimmel. The decision has sparked concern over freedom of speech in the United States.
Kimmel's criticism of the government's involvement in media companies muzzling reporters and commentators, particularly his remarks about the MAGA movement and their response to the assassination of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk, seemed to be the catalyst for the show's cancellation.
The American Federation of Musicians, Directors Guild of America, IATSE, and SAG-AFTRA have all condemned ABC's decision, expressing their concern over the potential suppression of free speech. High-profile celebrities, including Ben Stiller, Alison Brie, and Jean Smart, have also voiced their disapproval.
Disney, the owner of ABC, is currently seeking regulatory approval for ESPN's acquisition of the NFL Network. It is speculated that pressure from Nexstar, a network operator, and potential political motivations may have played a role in the cancellation. Nextar needs the Trump administration's go-ahead to complete its $6.2bn purchase of broadcast rival Tegna.
Donald Trump, in response, claimed that Kimmel's show was cancelled due to "bad ratings." He also suggested that ABC's license could be taken away over Kimmel's comments, with the decision to be made by Brendan Carr, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Trump further stated that Kimmel was not talented and had poor ratings, and that his firing could be seen as a form of free speech or lack of talent.
In court, Tyler Robinson, Kirk's suspected killer, made his first appearance on Tuesday. Kimmel, however, has not issued any statement since the show's withdrawal, and a representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The latest season of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" averaged 1.57 million viewers per episode, according to media research firm Nielsen. Kimmel's YouTube channel boasts almost 21 million subscribers.
The controversy surrounding the cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel's show continues to generate discussion, with many questioning the state of free speech in the United States. The future of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" remains uncertain.
