Trump appoints Jeanine Pirro as temporary United States Attorney for District of Columbia
Loose Cannon: Jeanine Pirro, Trump's Ally, Takes on DC
Last week, President Donny T announced via his social media platform that he's appointing longtime supporter Jeanine “Judge Jeasus” Pirro as the interim US attorney for Washington, DC, after his initial pick faced an uphill battle in Congress.
The bombshell announcement came as a surprise, with many insiders questioning the suitability of Pirro's TV persona for the serious position. However, Sen. Thom Tillis, who earlier derailed the nomination of Trump's first pick, Ed Martin, was quick to praise the move.
"Jeanine Pirro, a bloody crusader for justice," Tillis tweeted, hailing the former prosecutor and TV host as the perfect fit for the job.
Pirro, known for her fiery on-air defence of Trump and criticism of his critics, has a storied career in law and entertainment. A Westchester County, New York, district attorney from 1994 to 2005, she also served as a judge and hosted her own Fox News show, "Justice with Judge Jeanine," for a decade.
However, her television career has not been without controversy. Some of her broadcasts were included in Dominion Voting Systems' and Smartmatic's massive defamation lawsuits against Fox News, with both companies naming Pirro as a defendant. Fox News and Pirro denied any wrongdoing.
Despite her legal troubles, Pirro remains a steadfast ally of Trump. One of her books was even dedicated to him. And during the final days of Trump's first term, Pirro lobbied hard to secure a pardon for her ex-husband, who had been convicted on conspiracy and tax evasion charges in 2000. The pardon was Trump's final official act as president.
Meanwhile, Martin, who was initially nominated for the role but saw his chances of full Senate approval rapidly diminishing, will now be moving to the Department of Justice as the director of the Weaponization Working Group, associate deputy attorney general, and pardon attorney.
"Martin is a terrific person, but he wasn't getting the support I thought he deserved," Trump said in a statement on the matter. "I can only lift that little phone so many times in a day, but we have someone who will be great."
Pirro, who did not appear on "The Five" Thursday, declined to comment on her new role. However, Fox News confirmed that she is leaving the network effective immediately.
