In a significant turn of events, the U.S.-led peace efforts in Ukraine are currently facing a deadlock, following President Donald Trump's decision to shorten the deadline for Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire from 50 days to just 10 days. This move came with threats of new economic measures if Russia did not comply [1][2].

The U.S. and Ukraine are calling for a full and immediate ceasefire, followed by peace negotiations. Ukraine's leadership has welcomed Trump's stance [2]. However, Russia has decisively rejected this new deadline. Kremlin officials, including Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's Security Council Deputy Chair, stated that Trump cannot dictate the timing of peace talks [3][4].

Russia insists on continuing the war until its objectives are fully met, which include regime change in Ukraine, NATO-related demands, and reducing Ukraine's military capabilities [3][4]. The Kremlin has also linked peace negotiations to broader bilateral issues, such as arms control and economic cooperation [3][4].

Trump expressed his disappointment in Putin for continuing to bombard Ukrainian civilians while talking about ending the war. He has threatened to implement "severe tariffs" on Russia unless a peace deal is reached by early September, but he has now moved the deadline to Aug. 7-9 [1][2].

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed it carried out an overnight strike with long-range, air-launched weapons, hitting a Ukrainian air base and an ammunition depot in western Ukraine. However, regional authorities in Starokostiantyniv reported no damage or casualties from the attack [1].

There was no immediate response from Russia regarding Trump's new deadline. In a separate incident, a Russian drone blew out the windows of a 25-story residential building in Kyiv, injuring eight people, including a 4-year-old girl [1]. The Ukrainian air force reported an overnight attack by more than 300 drones, four cruise missiles, and three ballistic missiles from Russia [1].

Andrii Yermak, the head of Ukraine's presidential office, thanked Trump for shortening the deadline. Ukraine has urged Western countries to take a tougher line with Putin, believing that Western Ukraine, with its significant airfields, arsenals, and depots, is a key target in the ongoing conflict [1].

The situation reflects a broader deterioration in U.S.-Russia relations, with the Kremlin using the situation to pressure Washington over concessions unrelated to the conflict itself [3][4]. Trump has stated that he is not so interested in talking anymore with Putin [1].
