The upcoming US-Russia summit, scheduled for this weekend in the UK, will see President Donald Trump meeting with Vladimir Putin to discuss the ongoing Ukrainian crisis. This will be the first US-Russia summit since 2021.

The Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov has confirmed the meeting and stated that the leaders will discuss options for achieving a long-term peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis. The talks could potentially lead to a breakthrough in Trump's effort to end the conflict in Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine is ongoing, with Russian forces advancing deeper into Ukraine at great cost in troops and armour, while Ukrainian forces are locked in intense battles along the 620-mile frontline. The Pokrovsk area of the eastern Donetsk region is taking the brunt of punishment as Russia seeks to break out into the neighbouring Dnipropetrovsk region.

According to reports, the Trump administration appears to have accepted front-loading territorial concessions to Russia in exchange for a ceasefire, rather than a full peace settlement. Trump has suggested that his meeting with Putin could come before any discussion involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He has also stated that there will be "some swapping of territories to the betterment of both sides" in the potential resolution to the war.

However, it is important to note that there is no guarantee that the meeting will stop the fighting in Ukraine as Moscow and Kyiv remain far apart on their conditions for peace. Ukraine and several NATO allies are privately concerned that Trump might agree to Putin's proposals for ending the war without taking their positions into consideration.

The discussions between the two presidents are expected to focus on the Ukrainian crisis and potentially lead to a breakthrough in Trump's effort to end the conflict in Ukraine. Ushakov also mentioned that the two presidents could meet in Russia in the future and that an invitation has already been extended to Trump.

In the meantime, senior officials from the US, Ukraine, and several European countries are also meeting in the UK to discuss common positions. The future of the Ukrainian crisis hangs in the balance, with hopes pinned on the upcoming summit between Trump and Putin.
