In the lead-up to the highly anticipated summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, tensions are running high. The upcoming meeting, scheduled for this Friday, comes amidst ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where fierce front-line combat and long-range drone and missile strikes continue.

Russia's primary demand is that it holds veto power over any Western security guarantees for Ukraine, effectively preventing Ukraine from entering into binding security arrangements or receiving military support from NATO and allied countries. This demand, if met, would significantly undermine ongoing efforts to create lasting peace and security structures in the region.

Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and MFA Spokesperson Maria Zakharova, have explicitly rejected Western security guarantees for Ukraine that exclude Russian input. They insist on Ukraine's neutrality and non-alignment with NATO as preconditions for any long-term agreement. Moreover, Russia strongly opposes any presence of NATO troops in Ukraine, threatening to take "firm and harsh" actions to secure its demands.

From Ukraine's side, it can be inferred that they are likely pushing for Western security guarantees and alliances to safeguard against future Russian aggression. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Russia's demands constitute an attempt to "partition Ukraine."

Meanwhile, Russia continues military operations in contested areas like Kupyansk, indicating ongoing conflict intensity despite diplomatic efforts. In a concerning development, Russian troops broke through an area of the front north of the defensive city of Pokrovsk, advancing at least six miles toward the town of Dobropillia.

Zelenskyy and his officials have been seeking foreign support for Ukraine's key demands in any potential peace deal. However, Ukrainian representatives are not expected to attend the meeting between Trump and Putin. Instead, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance will participate in a virtual meeting with Zelenskyy and European allies on Wednesday.

Despite the upcoming summit, Zelenskyy suggested that Russian President Putin is not ready to end the fighting. Among Russia's demands are that Ukraine cede several regions in the south and east of the country, accept curbs on the size and sophistication of its military, and be permanently excluded from NATO. Trump, on the other hand, described the upcoming summit as a "feel-out meeting" and said he will tell Putin to end the war.

Zelenskyy has also stated that Russia is redeploying troops and forces in ways that suggest preparations for new offensive operations. This development further emphasizes the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and raises concerns about the potential for further escalation.

In summary, the positions of both parties set a tense and challenging stage for the US-Russia discussions in Anchorage. The upcoming summit promises to be a significant event in the ongoing saga of the conflict in Ukraine, with potential far-reaching implications for the region and beyond.
