Trump and Zelensky's Remarkable Achievements in the White House: Key Points from Their Press Conference
In a recent meeting at the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, each with different priorities but a shared goal of finding a peaceful resolution.

Trump's stance on the conflict involves pressing for a peace deal that heavily accommodates Russia's demands. He has signaled readiness to accept Russia's control over occupied parts of Ukraine, ruled out Ukraine joining NATO, and considered formally recognizing Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea. Despite his frustration with ongoing Russian strikes, Trump continues to seek a negotiated settlement with Putin and has recently set ultimatums calling for ceasefires, though with diminishing patience.
Zelensky, on the other hand, remains focused on maintaining Ukraine's sovereignty and securing strong security guarantees. He engaged with Trump and Western leaders to seek a peace deal that includes robust U.S. security guarantees, resembling NATO’s Article 5 protections but without formal membership. While Zelensky acknowledged such concessions, he also pressed for increased military aid and robust backing to keep Ukraine’s defense viable.
Specific proposals for resolution put forward primarily by Trump include accepting Russia’s continued control over territories it occupies in Ukraine, explicitly ruling out Ukrainian NATO membership, providing Ukraine with strong security guarantees short of NATO membership, seeking a definitive peace agreement rather than temporary ceasefires, and conditioning new economic measures on Russia’s agreement to a ceasefire within set deadlines.
Zelensky has shown openness to the U.S.' security guarantee proposal but has emphasized the need for sustained military support and has been reluctant to formally concede any core Ukrainian territory. The meeting underscored the delicate balance between Ukraine’s security demands and the U.S. drive for negotiated peace.
Trump stated that it's now or never for a Ukraine deal and plans to call Vladimir Putin after meeting Zelensky. He expressed hope for a trilateral meeting with Putin and Zelensky. However, no specific statements were made by either leader regarding the expected later discussions.
The map of Ukraine displayed in the Oval Office showed Russia-occupied territories shaded in pink, a move that could be interpreted as a sign of Trump's willingness to accept these territorial gains. Yet, Trump assured Ukraine will get "good" protection, but details will be discussed after meetings with European leaders.
Zelensky, during the meeting, did not respond when asked about territorial concessions. He is not open to elections in Ukraine during the conflict. The overall tone of Trump's statements suggests he is no longer willing to accommodate Kiev and Brussels, a shift from his initial stance.
The meeting marked a significant step in the ongoing negotiations, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict. However, the differing priorities and strategies of the two leaders may present challenges in reaching a consensus.
