Trump and Zelensky's Joint Press Conference: Key Takeaways on Tranquility, Ukrainian Security, and Discussions with Putin
The White House hosted a significant meeting on August 18, 2020, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, former U.S. President Donald Trump, and European leaders gathered to discuss future security guarantees for Ukraine.
Donald Trump, in his opening remarks, highlighted Ukraine's strategic importance, stating that it serves as the first line of defense due to its geographical location in Europe. The meeting, marked by smiles and a calm public exchange, contrasted the leaders' previous encounter in late February.
Following the public exchange, Trump and Zelensky retreated for a closed-door bilateral meeting. European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron, joined the discussions at 9 PM. During the meeting, Trump suggested a potential trilateral meeting with Zelensky, Vladimir Putin, and European leaders to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Trump optimistically declared that the war would end, but no specific details were provided about the security guarantees he mentioned earlier. The United States has promised to be involved in the future security of Ukraine, with Trump specifying that any security guarantee should be outside the NATO framework.
After the meeting, Trump stated he would speak with Putin after his meeting with Zelensky and European leaders. Trump mentioned he met with Putin on Friday in Alaska. A press conference between Zelensky and Trump was held, which can be watched above.
U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s envoy Keith Kellogg, have engaged with Zelensky and European counterparts to discuss concrete, legally binding security guarantees for Ukraine. Ukraine emphasizes that these guarantees must be multidimensional, covering military, diplomatic, and legal facets.
The goal is not just a ceasefire but a full peace deal that requires compromises from both sides, reflecting the complexity and length of the conflict, which has lasted over three years. The U.S. views itself as a facilitator that can bring Putin and Zelensky to an agreement.
However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov publicly denied any readiness for a meeting with Zelensky, saying the agenda for such a summit is "not ready at all," indicating Russian reluctance or delay despite Trump's claims.
While a trilateral meeting involving Putin, Zelensky, and Trump remains a stated goal of U.S. diplomacy, it has yet to materialize. Meanwhile, U.S. and European leaders, including Trump and Rubio, continue to pursue diplomatic solutions focusing on durable security guarantees for Ukraine.
