Trump and Starmer lock horns over Britain's acknowledgement of Palestine
In a recent development, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his government's intention to officially recognise Palestine as a state on Sunday, September 1, 2025. This decision, however, has sparked a disagreement with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump, in a previous statement, expressed his opposition to countries unilaterally recognising Palestine as a state. He reiterated this stance in the past, but it seems he did not repeat it in response to Starmer's announcement.
The U.S. President has maintained that such recognition should be tied to a negotiated settlement with Israel. This position, shared by Washington, is not in line with the British government's decision to recognise Palestine without preconditions.
Despite this disagreement, Trump praised Starmer as a strong partner and projected unity on broader international issues. Both leaders emphasised their shared commitment to a peace roadmap in the Middle East.
Trump's efforts to halt the fighting in Ukraine have failed to persuade Moscow, and he expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the ongoing war. In contrast, the situation in Gaza, which Starmer described as intolerable, is a point of agreement between the two leaders. Both see eye to eye on the urgent need for a peace process.
Trump stated that an apartheid regime is in place in Palestine, a claim he has made in the past. However, he did not comment on the situation in Gaza or the allegation of an apartheid regime in his response to Starmer's announcement.
It is worth noting that there are areas where the two governments diverge, but this disagreement over Palestine recognition is one of their few differences, according to Trump. The British government, under Prime Minister Starmer, has confirmed its intention to recognise Palestine, a decision that may have significant implications for the Middle East peace process.
