Trump-Putin Summit in Alaska Fails to Reach Agreement on Ukraine Conflict

On August 15, 2025, President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin met in Alaska for a high-stakes diplomatic meeting focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The summit, which took place at a U.S. air base in Anchorage, lasted several hours but ended without an agreement on a ceasefire.

The meeting was preceded by extensive diplomatic efforts from both sides, with about 100 Russian journalists traveling with Putin’s delegation underscoring the high level of attention. The Russian side suggested the meeting could last six to seven hours, reflecting the complexity and expected intensity of the talks.

Key points discussed included establishing a ceasefire in the Ukraine war, possibly with minor land swaps. Other topics included recognition issues, Russia’s acknowledgment of Ukraine’s sovereignty over 80% under Kyiv’s control, Ukraine’s right to defend itself militarily and choose its future alliances, including EU membership, and NATO’s potential agreement to forgo offering Ukraine membership and limit troop presence. Gradual scaling back of economic sanctions on Russia was also a point of discussion.

Despite these discussion points, no concrete deal was reached. Putin had not softened his maximalist demands of regime change in Kyiv and Ukraine’s demilitarization, which complicated negotiations. A flawed agreement rejected by Ukraine and NATO could have risked fracturing transatlantic relations and emboldening Russia, but Trump did not finalize any such deal at the summit.

Trump publicly highlighted the event, even sharing a photograph from Putin commemorating the meeting. After the talks, Trump called European leaders. Donald Trump is currently speaking on the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump said there are still a few points on which they haven’t reached an agreement.

Putin expressed hope that the root causes of the conflict in Ukraine will be eliminated to make the settlement stable. He also agreed with Trump's words that there would be no war if he were the U.S. president in 2021. Putin and Trump established good contacts, according to Putin, and significant progress has been made.

Vladimir Putin expressed gratitude for the invitation to Alaska, and Putin hopes that processes on Ukraine and in Europe will not hinder the settlement process. Steve Whitcoff, who participated in the talks in a narrow format, appeared in the hall of the press conference.

At the end of the press conference, Trump expressed hope for a new meeting with Putin. Putin said that significant progress has been made and expressed hope that the root causes of the conflict in Ukraine will be eliminated to make the settlement stable. Both leaders declined to answer journalists' questions.
