Trump and Putin to convene in Alaska on the following Friday for a discussion regarding Ukraine
On August 15, 2022, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a summit in the US state of Alaska to negotiate an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The meeting, which involved high-ranking officials from both sides including U.S. Secretary of State Rubio, envoy Stevekoff, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, lasted several hours and concluded with a joint press conference [1][2].
Discussions focused on Russia's actions in Ukraine and the broader U.S.-Russia relationship. Despite intense talks, including private and delegation-level meetings, the summit ended without a ceasefire agreement or peace deal. President Trump indicated he would soon know whether Putin is serious about peace [2].
Notably absent from the meeting were Ukraine and European leaders, although German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed that any resolution must involve Kyiv and start with a ceasefire, signaling that Europe's and Ukraine's roles remain critical [1].
As the negotiations continue, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in constant communication with the American side and other partners for a potential ceasefire in the war. Zelenskyy has made it clear that Ukraine will not give any concessions to Russia, asserting that Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier [3].
In a statement posted on Telegram, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine's territorial integrity, as enshrined in the constitution, must be non-negotiable [4]. He also emphasised that any solutions without Ukraine's involvement would be against peace [5].
The conflict in Ukraine began in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea and has since resulted in a war that has claimed thousands of lives. Russia currently claims four Ukrainian regions: Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, as well as the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea [6].
The announcement of the summit follows Trump's statement on Friday suggesting a possible ceasefire deal involving "some swapping of territories" [7]. However, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected the idea of territorial swaps [8].
As of August 16, 2022, the negotiations between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine are ongoing but have not produced a ceasefire or peace deal yet.
