In the political landscape, few relationships have been as intriguing as that between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Over the course of Trump's presidency, the two leaders have met on several occasions, both during his first term (2017–2021) and his second term in 2025.

Their meetings have included high-profile summits and less formal encounters, often centred on geopolitical tensions and bilateral relations. Key meetings and significant moments include:

  • July 2017, G20 Hamburg Summit (First official presidential meeting): This was the first official meeting between the two as presidents, marking the beginning of their direct diplomatic engagement.
  • July 2018, Helsinki Summit: This meeting, held in Finland, attracted major media and political attention due to Trump’s remarks and the broader suspicions of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election.
  • August 2025, Anchorage, Alaska Meeting: This was a significant encounter, as it was Putin’s first trip to the U.S. since 2015 and the first face-to-face meeting with Trump after the Ukraine war began. The talks involved Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff on the U.S. side, with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and adviser Yuri Ushakov attending with Putin.
  • The meeting took place on the tarmac, and Putin even shared a ride in Trump’s presidential limousine (“The Beast”), symbolizing a relatively cordial start.
  • They emerged early from talks saying progress had been made regarding Ukraine, but no ceasefire was agreed. Trump described the meeting as a “feel out” session to gauge Putin’s ideas for ending the war.
  • Both described the talks as constructive but underscored that "there’s no deal until there’s a deal."
  • Putin stressed the closeness of the U.S. and Russia geographically, emphasizing a neighborly tone.

This summit occurred amid global concern over the ongoing war in Ukraine, with Trump campaigning to broker peace—claiming he could end the conflict swiftly—though no breakthrough emerged. Ukrainian President Zelensky was not directly invited and was wary of any agreement compromising Ukraine's territorial integrity.

Beyond these notable meetings, Trump and Putin had several less publicized meetings and interactions during Trump’s first presidential term, often overshadowed by controversies regarding Russia’s actions in Ukraine, Crimea, Syria, and alleged election interference.

Overall, their history of meetings reflects a complex relationship marked by attempts at diplomacy amid deep strategic rivalry and conflict, highlighted by moments of unexpected cordiality but no lasting resolution to major issues such as the Ukraine war.
