Trump and Putin to Confer in Alaska
In a significant development, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15-16, 2025, to discuss potential peace efforts regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
During the three-hour-long summit, no formal deal to halt Russia's assault on Ukraine was reached, but discussions are reportedly ongoing. After the meeting, Trump indicated that a follow-up meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could take place, which would be a significant next step if it occurs. As of now, no confirmed date or location has been announced for any meeting involving both Putin and Zelenskyy or a trilateral summit including Trump, Putin, and Ukraine’s leader.
President Trump emphasized the importance of resolving the conflict, stating that his primary interest lies in saving lives, not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. When asked about the possibility of a Russia-Ukraine peace deal in the near term, Trump responded that his instinct tells him they have a shot at reaching a peace deal. The outcome, he added, will be known later, possibly even that day.
The scheduled meeting between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine is set for next Friday in Alaska, according to a post made by President Trump on social media. Trump's approach to foreign leaders, including Putin, is based on the old adage from President Ronald Reagan, "trust but verify."
Since taking office, President Trump has been instrumental in brokering peace initiatives involving various countries, including Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and Congo, India and Pakistan, and Serbia and Kosovo.
It is worth noting that the Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce the Nobel Peace Prize winner on October 10th. However, as of the current date, there is no confirmed scheduled meeting including all the leaders for a peace deal discussion.
